DESCRIPTION:
APW - G.P. Reed, Boston, 15J, with 54-hour winding indicator, mvt marked for retailer Currier & L'Heureux, 45mm, heavy 18K gold drum style "F M" OF recase with spring-loaded rear, initials to rear shield, glazed observation cuvette, bow with chain guards, white enamel DS dial with seconds-register at 3, winding indicator-register at 9, SW-shift-locking-LS, lever escapement with small moustache style counterpoise, nickel damascene, s#254. Gross weight of assembled watch 92.3 dwt (143.6 g). A rare and attractive example of this independent maker's work, based on known examples it is believed that G.P. Reed produced somewhere between 350 and 400 watches in total. Reed's production is notable among American horology for including a number of watches with interesting complications such as winding indicator display, spring detent escapements, and calendar watches.
CONDITION:
Mvt: Running, good winding indicator function, nearly mint cosmetic mvt condition overall, bright lustrous surfaces with some mild micro-fine scratches; dial with hl between center and winding indicator-register, very faint hl between center and seconds-register, group of very small fractures bordering left side of seconds-register, infinitesimal pinpoint flake bordering right side of winding indicator-register, very small flaking around center hole of seconds-register, seconds-register has evidently been re-secured with some glue seepage evident around its seat; excellent hands, minute with bit of oxide to its spade, winding indicator-hand with some finish loss; case appears to be an extremely well executed recasing as evidenced by a small indexing notch in the interior or the band (not corresponding to anything with the present mvt, but of the type seen among some European production of the era) and by some filing evident at the setting lever position, case shows hardly any wear, few nicks to band, no dents or dings, excellent engine turning and engraving detail, glazed observation cuvette appears to be a well executed replacement of an original traditional style cuvette with some gold solder evident at the seating of bezel portion to segment at hinge; tight bow, crown shows light wear; glass crystal with some small scratches and very small edge nicks.
